We had an eventful day here at the hospital, particularly due to one of the external drains beginning to leak. It is the subdural drain (the one that was not inside the brain), and, I believe due to the lack of draining from it, the neurosurgeon decided to have a nurse remove it. It's funny to be on a first name basis with the nurse from neurosurgery, but she comes by daily and we appreciate her efforts. So, Brooklyn now only has one drain going and seems to be doing fine. The neurosurgeon typically comes by in rounds in the morning but was on call today so I have not seen him yet. If he comes by I'll post any new information he shares.
I also need to take a moment to count some of the numerous blessings we have been granted during these past months. I'm going to try to number them "one by one" although I'm sure the list will be incomplete.
1. Brooklyn's peaceful, courageous spirit. Despite her challenges, she remains peaceful and pretty content most of the time. It really is amazing that she does not complain more.
2. Jenny's innate abilities and concerns as a mother and spouse. I could not ask for a better, more supportive wife and mother for my children during stressful times such as these. Jenny has developed into a great disciple of Christ, particularly in how she cares for those around her.
3. Our wonderful family. Many have traveled, some on a regular basis, to be with and support us and have given us more reasons to know how fortunate we are to be among such wonderful people.
4. My co-authors and colleagues. My co-authors and I have been working on projects and I have asked much of them and I am grateful for their efforts to move our projects forward. My colleagues have been so concerned and willing to help as needs arise. Their patience is so much appreciated. I would also note how grateful I am that it worked out to have my research semester this spring, as I try to get some work done at the hospital or from home it is nice to have much of my teaching done in the fall. This was proposed by one of my colleagues before we even knew of Brooklyn's condition and, as my stake president recently pointed out, this truly is a "tender mercy" from the Lord (1 Nephi 1:20).
5. The amazing medical staff here at Primary Children's. The nurses provide exceptional care and the tech's that assist them are so helpful. They are consistently kind and willing to do whatever is needed and try their best to help us get the rest we need when we are here.
6. Brooklyn's siblings. This has not necessarily been an easy time for the kids but they have handled everything well. One of the social workers here at the hospital who works with families commented how great the kids are and one of our nurses wanted to clone Collin. Even though it's been tough, they've made the most of the time here.
7. The facilities here at PCMC - from the beautiful building to the play room and the Ronald McDonald room, they have really set this place up to make us as comfortable as possible and it makes a huge difference, particularly when our whole family and guests are here.
8. Friends near and far. So many comment on how much they appreciate hearing updates on Brooklyn in this blog and leave kind comments. So many are consistently asking what can be done to help, whether in Logan or even here in Salt Lake. We've had meals, invitations for our kids to come over, countless rides for our children, etc., and even a stop in Salt Lake to drop off items on the way to the airport! And while we'll never know all the prayers that have been offered up in our behalf, we do know they are occurring through the spirit and comfort we feel.
9. The nice woman (Rosa?) who cut my hair yesterday. I really needed it cut!
10. My Heavenly Father, His Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost. We've often heard They are there for us and it's true. It's interesting that we are allowed to feel alone or sad or anxious, even for much of many days, but in the end, They are always there for us. The Spirit lets me know this is true when I feel Their love.
Thanks again for the continued support!
