When ye are in the service...

I can say with some degree of certainty that, when a baby has arrived, no family has ever been better watched over than our family by our neighbors, family, friends. It truly is a blessing to be surrounded by such Christlike people.  I would try to list all the kind acts we have experienced over the last week or so, but I would be sure to forget some act of kindness.  I only hope we can try to serve as others have served us when opportunities arise in the future.

During times like this, when we are blessed by others, I have come to understand that serving those around us, watching over those around us, is really how we accomplish our purpose here on earth.  Not ironically, when we are serving is when I know we find the most joy.   I believe this is one of the reasons we are fortunate to have families, neighborhoods, wards, and other associations - to serve and to be served.  When we are served, which can be hard for some of us, it helps us know that we are cared about, including by Our Heavenly Father, who has inspired or sent others to help us and bless us.

While writing this, I started thinking of President Uchtdorf's Christmas message last year, which focused on being a good receiver.  In part, he said "When we are good and grateful receivers, we open a door to deepen our relationship with the giver of the gift." Here is a link to his talk in case any of you are interested - perfect for this season of the year:

Brooklyn continues to do well.  She is eating well and the shunt appears to be continually effective at draining fluid.  She has the sweetest face when she is sleeping and has a cute cry.  I asked my mother in law what the first thing is when she hears Brooklyn's name, and she commented on what a sweet and peaceful baby she is. I also asked Katelyn about her little sister and the first thing she thinks of is "her nose." She does have a cute nose!
